Lions Leader Dogs inspired Lion James Boswell, guest speaker for the Shippensburg Lions Club meeting of May 11, to join the York Downtown Lions Club in April 1977. One year prior to that, Lion Jim took his first walk with a Leader Dog. The following month he brought his first Leader Dog Boomer, a golden retriever to York County, Pennsylvania. In the late 1970's, he began working with his second Leader Dog, a black lab named Bruno. In August 1994 he began working with his third Leader Dog, a yellow lab named Joe, and in January 2000 he trained with and began working with a fourth Leader Dog named Colan. Lion Jim gave his talk about the value of Leader Dogs and the safety of blind pedestrians. Lion Jim is the Leader Dog Chairperson of District 14C. A certificate of appreciation and a check were awarded to Lion Jim and Colan by Lion Jerry Judy, President of the Shippensburg Lions Club. ________________________________________________________________________ The Shippensburg Lions Club honored Kyle Plasterer as Student of the Month of May. In the summer he plays baseball for American Legion Post 223 and in his spare time his hobbies consist of hunting, fishing and mountain biking. Kyle will attend Penn State, Altoona and major in Criminal Justice/Foreensic Science. A certificate of scholastic achievement was presented to Kyle Plasterer by Lion President Jerry Judy. ________________________________________________________________________ Guest speakers for the May 18 meeting of the Shippensburg Lions Club were Cub Pack 251. The boys have been on a day trip to Washington DC, marched in the Halloween Parade, participated in the Blue and Gold Banquet and Pinewood Derby competition. The boys also helped during clean up day at Kings Gap State Park after loggers cut an area plagued by Gypsy Moths.
